Easy Crochet Tunic Free Pattern

This easy crochet tunic is perfect to wear on cool summer evenings and crisp autumn days. Believe it or not, that was my first crochet project. I always wanted to learn how to crochet and was hoping that one day I will find the right person to teach me.

Well, her name is Mary Grace, my lovely neighbor. She came by my house to introduce herself after we moved in to the neighborhood, a couple years ago. She brought me a kitchen towel angel welcome gift, that she made herself. That day I found out that she is a crochet expert and since then we became crochet buddies.

Mary Grace helped me with my first crochet project, the Lion Brand Crochet Bronze Beauty Top. I made it a little longer than it shows in the pattern, making it look more like a tunic. Being over the moon about my accomplishment, I wanted the easy crochet tunic in all different colors, lol. I decided to crochet this same top but in my daughter size, instead.

2-3 (4-5) toddler

MATERIALS

GAUGE

(ch 3, 3 dc) 2 times + 4 rows = 3”

ABBREVIATIONS 

beg = begin(ning)

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

inc = increase (ing)

rnd = round

sc = single crochet

st(s) = stitch(es)

yo = yarn over

YOKE

Start with a slipknot and Ch 66

 

Round 1: sc in second ch from the hook, sc in every st to the end (65 sc)

 

Slip st in top sc to join, being careful not to twist.

 

Round 2: ch 3, dc in next 2sc, (ch 3, skip next sc, dc in next 3 sc) 15 times,

 

skip last sc, dc in top of beg ch (16 ch-spaces)

 

Round 3: slip st in first ch-space, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, (ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-space) around, dc in top of beg ch (16 ch-spaces)

 

 

 

Round 4 (inc rnd): slip st in first space, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 3,

    Corner in the next ch-space: (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-space,

Ch 3, (3 dc in next ch-space, chain 3) 4 times,

    Corner in the next ch-space: (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-space,

Ch 3, work  (3 dc in next ch-space, chain 3) 2 times,

    Corner in the next ch-space: (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-space,

Ch 3, (3 dc in next ch-space, chain 3) 4 times,

        Corner in the next ch-space: (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-space,

Ch 3, 3 dc in the next ch-space, ch 3,

Dc in top of beg ch (20 ch-spaces).

 

Work:

• 2 more inc rnds for 2-3 size,

• 3 more inc rnds for 4-5 size,

Work corner in each corner ch-space, increasing number of repeats between corners.

That means, in:

Round 5 (inc rnd) u will end up with 24 ch-spaces, Round 6 (inc rnd) – 28 ch-spaces, Round 7 (inc rnd) – 32 ch-spaces.

After last inc rnd, cut the yarn, fasten off and weave in end. You may weave in the yarn in the neck line now, as well.

 

BODY

Corners right side facing up.

 

Joining two corners. Insert hook in ch-space of corner, draw up a loop, then insert hook in ch-space of next corner, draw up a loop. Yo and draw through 2 loops on hook, yo and draw through 1 loop. 2 dc in the ch-space of second corner.

 

 

 

Ch 3 (3 dc in next ch-space, ch 3) work up to ch-space before corner.

 

Join two corners. Draw up a loop in first ch-space of corner, then draw up a loop in ch-space of second corner. Yo and draw through 2 loops on hook, yo and draw through 1 loop. 2 dc in the ch-space of second corner.

 

Ch3 (3 dc in next ch-space, ch3) work up to first joined corners.

Dc on top of beg ch, slip st in first ch-space.

Working even on 16 ch-spaces (2-3 size) or 18 ch-spaces (4-5), repeat Round 3 for 14 rounds or until desired length. At end of last rnd, omit dc in top of beg ch. Slip stitch to beg ch, instead.

Ch 1. Sc in same st, sc in eachdc, 2 sc in each ch-space around. Slip st to beg sc, fasten off and weave in cut yarn.

SLEEVES

With right side facing, locate corner ch-spaces previously joined for BODY. Join with slip st to right ch-space, ch 3, 2 dc in the left ch-space.

 

Ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-space – around, dc in top of beg ch.

Working even on 7 ch-spaces, repeat BODY Round 2 for 12 rounds or until desired length. At end of last rnd, omit dc in top of beg ch. Slip st to beg ch instead.

Work 1 rnd of sc as for bottom of BODY.
