I love Christmas and I always want to make the season fun and special. So, this year I’m making an easy elf hat sewing project. You can make the elf hats for your whole family and then shoot fun Christmas photos in them.  Sewing the elf hats it’s a super easy and fast project because you use a fleece fabric. And, as you probably know that this kind of fabric doesn’t flay. So, you are not spending time finishing the raw edges, and it saves you time.

Let’s get ready for making an easy elf hat sewing project!

I highly recommend buying fleece fabric at your local Joann store or Joann.com for your convenience. You’ll find there a wide array of fabrics to choose from at a reasonable price. Step 2. Now, cut all the pieces out of the fabric and remember to add ½ seam allowance. Then, stitch short ends together of every strip and stitch the long edge of the top piece.

Step 3. Having the pieces right side together stitch them one by one around the edges. and, start sewing the elf hat from the top.

Step 4. Next, cut the brim piece out of the fabric and stitch the short edges right side together.

Align the edges of the brim wrong side together and you can zigzag stitch them so, they stay together.

With the wrong side of the top elf hat and right side of the brim together, stitch around. (picture below shows a different hat but shows how is done)

Step 5. Cut out four ears out of the felt and pin two together. Felt fabric doesn’t show right or wrong side so, it doesn’t matter which side you put it together.

Stitch the ear pieces together leaving 1.5” opening. Also, notch the edges around.

Turn the ears inside out and hand stitch the opening close. Nicely flatten the edges out and stitch the earlobe marks.

Step 6. Hand stitch the ears in couple spots to the side of the brim and stitch the jingle bell to the elf hat top. And, ta-da you got yourself an elf hat!

My silly daughter requested an elf hat without stripes and that was fine by me! It made the elf hat sewing project super easy and quick to sew. On top of it, green is her favorite color, so it worked out perfectly.

Below is the graph for 20” head circumference.

So, instead of cutting the hat piece into stripes, you leave it as it is and just stitching the side edge. Then, follow the rest of the steps like for the adult size elf hat and use the small ears template.

    • Hello Lorraine, I’m sorry but I don’t quite understand your question. The hat itself is about 25″ long, and the first cone shape piece at the top of the hat is about 5.5 inch tall. Each striped piece should be around 2.5 inches tall. hope that helps.

  2. I was you,g to make these out of non- stretchy fabric. I want to make sure I am able to use the head circumference as the base. Do in general would I take the head circumference, divide by 2, then add half an inch? And that would work for a non stretch fabric?
